Poor contact lens care can cause discomfort, irritated eyes, conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers and even blindness. Some patients are allergic to chemicals in contact lens solutions. Present lens care systems need improvement in convenience, comfort, effectiveness and safety. Lens care solutions being marketed do not kill microorganisms that cause serious eye diseases such as Acanthamoeba and Fusarium keratitis. Many eye problems are due to poor compliance with prescribed contact lens care regimens. Contact lens wearers find conventional lens care regimens to be time-consuming, inconvenient, boring and costly. The result is that contact lens wearers have been reported to use only about 20% of the lens care products recommended for proper cleaning and disinfection. The problems impatient patients encounter with compliance, and the discomforts and hazards of poor compliance, have been barriers to the growth of the contact lens and lens care markets.

Solutions For Solutions

Manufacturers have taken three different approaches to the lens-care/compliance problems. One is frequent replacement or disposable lenses. However, daily disposable lenses are fragile and replacement is more expensive so have not been popular. Unless lenses are replaced daily or worn until replacement, lens care is still needed. Extended (overnight) wear has been associated with hypoxia and corneal ulcers. The contact lens market is predominately one week to three-month replacement with daily cleaning and disinfection. The North American lens care solution market is growing and is now approximately $2 Billion at wholesale and the global market is about double.

A second approach is to trade some efficacy for more convenient or simpler regimens. Apparently, the theory is that a less effective disinfection process properly used is better than a more effective disinfection process that may be improperly used. But disinfection is questionable even when the directions are followed and a study indicates that compliance is worse, not better, with the less effective regimens. Some of the major problems with the popular multipurpose solution regimens are that the solutions are weak disinfectants requiring at least a two hour soak after a very thorough rubbing and rinsing, and this still doesn't kill germs hiding in biofilms, which form in lens cases and can reinfect contact lenses.

The third approach is to reduce the side effects; inconvenience, complexity and cost of lens care regimens without sacrifice of effectiveness, and preferably with improved effectiveness.

Presumably everyone would prefer the third approach if it were technically feasible. If we could have a lens care process that was both better and easier, there would be no point to increasing contact lens cost by frequent replacement, or to sacrifice effectiveness to simplify regimens.

Breakthrough!

Fortunately, a breakthrough in technology has made possible this third approach. The QuickPure™ ozone system for cleaning and disinfection can at the same time do a far better job and do it much more simply and conveniently. Ozone obsoletes present lens care methods and can be used with both soft contact lenses and rigid gas-permeable contact lenses.

Ozone, a form of oxygen with three atoms per molecule instead of the two atoms for ordinary oxygen, is the most powerful disinfectant known. The pocketsize QuickPure™ device generates ozone as needed from the oxygen in air using electricity from a battery. Ozone can kill not only bacteria but also viruses, yeasts, algae, fungi and protozoa, including Acanthamoeba cysts that can cause blindness. It is over 100,000 times more effective than hydrogen peroxide, which is the most effective disinfectant presently available.

Ozone disinfection is simple and convenient. It requires only four steps compared to up to 25 steps for competitive systems. The system does not depend on the user following a complicated procedure. There is no lens rubbing required. Just remove lenses and place them in the lens holder. Fill the lens cup with buffered saline solution. Put the lens holder in the lens cup, and the lens cup in the base unit. That starts the unit which shuts off automatically after three minutes. The lenses are then clean, disinfected and ready to wear. It is completely automatic and so easy it can become a habit rather than a hassle. If the system is used, compliance is 100% because it does not depend on the user conscientiously following a complex routine.

The ozone process also disinfects the lens cup and biofilms are destroyed. The lens cup with the clean lenses can be removed from the base unit and carried in a pocket or purse where the lenses remain fresh until needed. The small base unit can also be easily carried for travel. Lenses can be cleaned, disinfected and refreshed in only three minutes after swimming or dust in the eye, or before a night out. The convenience and almost instant disinfection fit today's busy lifestyles and encourage better eye care.

Ozone is fast; only a few minutes are needed to disinfect. 99.99% or more of all the FDA challenge organisms can be inactivated in about three minutes. Ozone is effective and safe at very low concentrations. In minutes, one part per million of ozone can kill micro-organisms that would resist 30,000 parts per million (3%) hydrogen peroxide. At such low concentrations, lenses can be removed from the disinfecting solution and put on the eyes without intermediate neutralizing and rinsing steps. Ozone turns back into ordinary oxygen after a few minutes, so there would be no disinfectant residual.

At the same time as it disinfects, ozone can clean lenses by destroying biofilms and by the agitation of the process. Tedious finger rubbing of the lenses with various cleaning solutions would be unnecessary and the risk of damaging lenses minimized. Daily, or more often, cleaning and removal of biofilms along with disinfection would increase contact lens comfort and wearer satisfaction.

With ozone, a low cost buffered saline solution is the only solution required. No chemicals are needed which eliminates the risk of chemical sensitivity and multipurpose-solution-induced dry eye. An ozone system is perfect for allergic patients requiring a lens care system free of chemicals such as preservatives, surfactants or disinfectants to prevent chemically induced red eye. Ozone can eliminate problems with non-sterile solutions and can disinfect any solution used. Ozone has been used for sterilization in the manufacture of contact lens solutions.

Ozone is not only superior to conventional contact lens care, but over time, it can cost substantially less. Compliance will be improved by the convenience and automatic operation, and by reducing lens care cost. Improved compliance, effectiveness and safety will increase lens comfort and reduce doctor visits needed to deal with eye problems. Contact lens wearers will demand the eye comfort, simplicity, ease of use, convenience, and the reduction in cost and eye problems with ozone lens care. Eye doctors will appreciate the reduction in patient complaints about their contact lenses. With good distribution and some consumer advertising, word-of-mouth will make ozone devices walk off retailer shelves. It is a natural for TV, Internet and catalog sales.
